An
invitation to non-members and beginners
If
you would like to come along to the Club and have a look, please feel free to do
so at
any time. You'll find the club in use most evenings or weekends. There is plenty
of seating around the green for spectators; after all, what could be more
relaxing on a warm summer’s afternoon than watching a game of bowls? Remember,
visitors are always welcome.
If you wish to try your hand at bowls, you'll need to be accompanied by a member. The best thing to do is speak to one of our bowlers, who should
be able to arrange for you to have an introductory session with an instructor,
or offer to accompany you for a 'roll-up'.
Club bowls, mats and jacks are available to use. New
bowlers are encouraged to take some instruction and coaching sessions can be easily arranged. You'll always find Camberley bowlers
understanding and prepared to offer guidance and
encouragement.
After an initial introduction and in order to continue learning to bowl, you will need to become a member. At the clubhouse you can pick
up a membership form and have a word with a Club member
for advice on how to apply.
What
will I need
?
If
you decide to start playing bowls, you will need some clothing to begin with.
Like
most clubs, Camberley has a dress code
which is part of the 'game of bowls' and follows a certain tradition. Camberley
is also progressive in its thinking and has 'coloured match shirts' which have been
greeted positively by all members.
MEN:
Dress
on the green consists of grey trousers (except where white is
specified), valid 'bowls shoes' and white above the waist. Shirts require collars and sleeves. Club ties may be
worn. For players attending matches, in addition to the above, Club ties and
blazers are usually worn.
LADIES: A white dress or white blouse or other white top with grey or white
skirt/trousers as designated; a blue cardigan or other blue top with
Club Badge (optional) and approved bowling shoes. Regulation skirt/trousers,
grey or white as designated, or a white dress to be worn for all matches and
Competitions.

It's
probably not a good idea to purchase your own set of bowls immediately. The Club
has various sets of bowls for beginners to use, and it is wise to experiment to
find the most suitable size. When you're ready to buy your own woods, you may
find suitable sets for sale second hand, either privately or in some bowls
shops; or you can buy a new set for around £85 to £130. It
is often a good first step to acquire a second hand set and many fine sets are
available for about £40.
A
range of sizes and weights are available, within certain limits. Each wood is
shaped (not weighted) to make
it follow a curved path. This is called the bias
- and again the amount of bias must be within certain limits. Most bowlers will
be happy to advise you on choice of bowls, but as personal preference plays a
large part, expect some conflicting recommendations!
